Local Boy Scouts save peer from hypothermia

June 17th, 2003 ~On a recent summer camp trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota, Jesse (12) and J.R. (11) both from Boy Scout Troop 152, had an experience they will never forget.  Late at night around 1:00 am the boys, camped atop medicine mountain, heard a strange noise.

"We just sprang from the shelter," said Jesse.

After two tries, they found thirteen year old Dominick, a scout from St. Louis already well into hypothermia.  The  boys, recognizing the key signs began to massage Dominick's extremities then went further up the mountain to alert staff. Later they helped carry Dominick back down the mountain.

The doctor at the local hospital at which Dominick was treated said that his temperature had dipped into the low nineties and if Jesse and JR would not have found him, Dominick would not have made it through the night.
